True Colors® is a holistic whole school approach to
leadership and wellbeing in education for adults and
children alike. It provides a simple way to tap into and
develop self awareness. Discovering our strengths, values
and needs as well as our stressors and frustrations, helps
us achieve sustainable personal change and, most
importantly, understand others in the same way thus
improving our ability to lead and work with them.
True Colors® increases tolerance, appreciation of others
who are different to you and your ability to connect and
work with them.
True Colors® has been used extensively in the US for the
last 30 years. In the UK some of the True Colors team have
been working with a number of schools, including
Purbrook Park School where they have been working to
create a True Colors culture throughout the school since
September 2009.
The progressive and inclusive culture at the school lends
itself well to True Colors. Starting initially with INSET
"Wellbeing Days" - they have trained 14 of the teaching
staff to run workshops for staff and use True Colors® with
the pupils.
Here are some comments from staff members who
attended a True Colors Wellbeing Day held at the school
for the teaching team:
"True Colors gives you another paradigm of thinking. You
can see things differently and understand how others
behave, not just mad, bad, sad. We're really excited about
rolling it out to all of the staff and pupils. Senior
management staff got so much from it they can't wait to
do it again with their teams."
Steve Young, Assistant Head, Purbrook Park School
"I now have a much better understanding of how my team
works and they have a better understanding of me. I
recognised the impact True Colors could have not just for
staff but for the entire school. The wellbeing session was
such a success, even my most experienced team members
said it was the best they had experienced. One admitted
'now I finally understand myself'.
Headmaster, Purbrook Park School
A basic 3 hour True Colors® workshop forms an essential
first step in the leadership development support which can
be offered to schools. This session will develop the 4
domains of emotional intelligence in a fun, creative and
experiential way:
- Self awareness – the recognition and understanding of
personal values, talents, joys, strengths
- Self management – personal stressors and frustrations,
self regulation
- Social awareness – empathy and an appreciation and
understanding of others
- Relationship management – conflict resolution,
collaboration and team work
